Most prescriptions are now signed, sent and processed electronically. This means our patients no longer need to handle paper prescriptions, they can simply collect medication directly from the pharmacy after it is issued.
Patients have 2 choices for how this works.
They can choose a pharmacy or dispenser to dispense all your prescriptions. When they request a prescription from the GP, it will be sent electronically to the dispenser they have chosen. They can collect their medicines or appliances without having to hand in a paper prescription.
They can decide each time they are issued a prescription where they would like it to be dispensed. When they are issued a prescription, they will be given a TOKEN, which is similar to a prescription, they can take this to any pharmacy or other dispenser in England. The paper copy (Token) will contain a unique barcode that will be scanned to download their prescription from the secure NHS database.
Paper prescriptions (Tokens) will continue to be available in special circumstances, but almost all prescriptions will be processed electronically.
